John James Audubon - IMPERIAL FOLIO EDITION - Print Gallery


John James Audubon completed his magnificant work Birds of America in 1838. The work consisted of 435 double elephant folio sized aquatints, which were engraved and hand colored by the firm of Robert Havell in London, England. That original first edition is called the Havell edition.

When Audubon returned to the United States after completing the Havell edition, he turned to a new project called The Viviparous Quadrupeds of North America, in which he created a folio sized edition of 150 mammals of North America. His son, John Woodhouse Audubon, assisted with this project and is the artist credited on some of the works. This edition was created between 1845 and 1848 by the lithographer J.T. Bowen of Philadelphia. Stone lithography was used as the medium for this edition, and each print was then hand colored. The size of each print is Imperial Folio, which is approximately 28 by 22 inches.

All of these Imperial Folio edition prints listed below are for sale and are authentic Imperial Folio edition originals except for the uncolored White Wolf, Plate 72, which is a rare restrike made in 1969.
