John James Audubon - FASCICLE - Gallery


So what is a fascicle? A fascicle is an original part that contains 5 original first edition octavo prints. When John James Audubon was first creating Birds of America, the Royal Octavo Edition (1840-1844), he would issue the prints as they were being made in groups of 5 prints at a time. The 5 prints that made up a single grouping would all have the same number on the upper left hand corner of the print. So the number in the upper left would uniquely identify the part or fascicle that each print belonged to, and the plate number in the upper right hand side of each print would uniquely identify the print itself. Subscribers would then take their fascicles to a bookbinder to have them bound into books that usually contained 70 prints each. The outer - often blue colored - wrappers holding the fascicles together would then be discarded. Original fascicles that were never bound into books are very rare today.
